Dowry System
The dowry system in Bangladesh is a traditional practice where the bride’s family is expected to provide a set of gifts, money and property to the groom’s family as a condition for marriage. This practice is deeply ingrained in the culture and is considered an essential aspect of a traditional wedding. Despite laws and efforts to eradicate the dowry system, it remains prevalent in rural areas and among lower-income families. The dowry system often leads to financial strain on the bride’s family and can even result in harassment, abuse, or even death if the groom’s family feels the dowry was not sufficient. The dowry system also reinforces gender inequality and reinforces the idea that women are a financial burden on their families. It is important for society to continue to educate and raise awareness about the negative effects of the dowry system and work towards eradicating this harmful practice.

যৌতুক মানে বিবাহের সময় কনে তার পিতার বাড়ি থেকে স্বামীর বাড়িতে যে সম্পত্তি বা অর্থ নিয়ে আসে। বর্তমান সময়ে বাংলাদেশে বিবাহের ক্ষেত্রে যৌতুক দেওয়ার এবং দেওয়ার ব্যবস্থার প্রচলন বেড়ে গিয়েছে। এটি বাংলাদেশের একটি বড় সমস্যা হিসাবে দেখা দিয়েছে। বাংলাদেশী সমাজে এই সিস্টেমটিকে একটি গুরুতর সমস্যা হিসাবে বিবেচনা করা হয়। যৌতুকের জন্য স্ত্রী স্বামী দ্বারা অমানবিক নির্যাতনের শিকার হন এমনকি হত্যা পর্যন্ত করা হয়। যৌতুকের কারনে নির্যাতনের শিকার বেশিরভাগ পিতামাতা দরিদ্র। তারা তাদের কন্যাদের বিয়ে দেওয়ার আগে তাদের দেওয়া কথা রাখতে পারে না। এর ফলে বিশৃঙ্খলা এবং নরকীয় হানাহানি বৃদ্ধি পায়।
যাইহোক, এই সমস্যা সমাধানে জনগনের মধ্যে সচেতনতা বৃদ্ধি করতে হবে। যৌতুক ব্যবস্থা বিরুদ্ধে আন্দোলন ঘোষণার এখনই সময়।
